Nafplion
This town, famous for its fortresses which defended the city, is reachable if you are willing to climb the 850 steps to reach the summit of the Palamidi fort, which boasts a spectacular view of the city and its bay.
Since Venetian times, the platia Syntagmatos has been the centre of city life here. This beautifully paved square offers its visitors a delightful opportunity to indulge in one of its cafes or restaurants. Its appearance is unchanged since the 18th century, when the Turks built several mosques around the area. Most of the streets are narrow paths connected by small steps, which swerve around the city square. The many Turkish fountains with Arabic scripture serve to remind us that Nafplion was once a Turkish city.
